Privacy Policy for Vulcana
Last updated: 30 September 2026
No account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. Your precise location, speed and altitude stay on your iPhone. To show the weather where you are, the app sends an area about 11 km across to our server, not linked to you in any way.
1. Who we are
Vulcana (“the App”) is published by SIA SPACE, LV40203141856, "Padambji", Vārpu ciems, Baldones pag., Ķekavas nov., LV-2125, Latvia (“SIA SPACE”, “we”). SIA SPACE, shown on the App Store as “Space SIA”, is the controller of the personal data described in this policy. Contact: work@siaspace.eu.
2. What stays on your iPhone
With your permission the App reads your device’s location. It uses it on the phone only, to:
- calculate the distance to earthquakes and how strongly one may have been felt where you are;
- decide whether to notify you about an earthquake, and which airports matter to you;
- choose which volcano the radio listens to.
Your speed and altitude drive the speedometer, the altimeter and the music of the radio. They are read only while the radio plays or a gauge is on screen, and they are never stored or sent anywhere.
The App stores on your iPhone: your game progress and statistics, your settings, the last known location (used for notifications while the App is closed), the last weather category of the airports that matter to you (to notice a change), the volcano you chose, and earthquake data from the last 30 days. If iCloud Backup is on, this data can be part of your personal backup, which we cannot access. Deleting the App deletes it.
3. What leaves your iPhone, and to whom
Our server. To fetch the local weather, the App rounds your position on the phone to a grid of 0.1° (about 11 km) and sends only that area to our server, which runs on Cloudflare Workers (Cloudflare, Inc., acting for us). The request carries no name, account, device identifier or precise position. The weather for the area is cached at Cloudflare’s edge for up to 30 minutes, keyed by the area; we keep no record of who asked. Cloudflare processes your IP address to deliver the request and protect against abuse. We do not log or store IP addresses.
MET Norway. Our server passes the rounded area’s coordinates to MET Norway (the Norwegian Meteorological Institute) to get a forecast. MET Norway receives the request from our server and does not see your IP address.
Contacted directly by your iPhone, without any location: INGV, USGS and EMSC (earthquake data) and Mapbox (the map). Like any website, they can see your IP address. When the map shows your position, the Mapbox SDK may collect anonymised telemetry, including location, to improve its maps; you can switch it off from the ⓘ button on the map (“Telemetry settings”).
Contacted only by our server, with no data about you: NOAA’s Aviation Weather Center (airport weather reports), INGV (volcano seismicity and aviation notices) and MET Norway (forecasts for fixed points over Sicily and the volcano summits).
4. Notifications
All notifications are local: your iPhone creates them after the App has fetched new data. They cover earthquakes within your chosen radius and magnitude, and changes in the weather report of the airports that matter to you. We run no push-notification server and do not know who receives them. You can switch them off in the App’s Settings or in the iPhone Settings.
5. Legal basis (EU/EEA)
We process the approximate area described above because it is necessary to provide the local-weather feature you use (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR) and in our legitimate interest in running the service efficiently (Article 6(1)(f)). Access to your location is only ever granted by you through iOS, and you can withdraw it at any time; the App keeps working without it, with fewer features.
6. How long
Local weather is kept in Cloudflare’s edge cache for up to 30 minutes. Shared data that is not about anyone (volcano and airport reports, the Sicily weather grid) is kept for up to four hours. We keep no request logs. Data on your iPhone stays there until you delete it or the App.
7. Transfers outside the EEA
Cloudflare, Mapbox and the US Geological Survey are based in the United States, so your IP address may be processed there. Cloudflare and Mapbox protect such transfers under their own safeguards, such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses. INGV (Italy), EMSC (France) and MET Norway (Norway) are in the EEA.
8. Your rights
You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict and object to the processing of your personal data, and to data portability. You can complain to the Data State Inspectorate of Latvia (Datu valsts inspekcija, www.dvi.gov.lv) or to the authority where you live. Because we cannot connect a weather request to a person, we usually hold no data about you to return or erase — but write to us and we will answer.
9. Children
The App is not directed at children and collects no personal data from anyone, children included.
10. Not a warning system
Vulcana is an informational app. It is not an official earthquake, tsunami or volcano warning system and must not be used for safety, emergency or aviation decisions. See the Terms & licences.
11. Changes and contact
