Frequent questions
Why is the magnitude of some earthquakes hidden?
That is the game. A quake from the last hour that you could have felt where you are is shown without its magnitude, so you can guess it first. After your guess, or after an hour, it is shown as usual.
I do not receive notifications.
Check that notifications and location are allowed for Vulcana in the iPhone Settings, and look at the radius and minimum magnitude in the app’s Settings → Notifications. Notifications are made on your phone after the app has fetched new data, so iOS decides how often that happens in the background.
How fast does an earthquake appear?
As fast as INGV, USGS or EMSC publish it, usually a few minutes after the event. Early locations and magnitudes are sometimes revised.
What do the volcano colours and “VONA” mean?
The ring shows seismic unrest near the summit compared with the previous 29 days. “VONA” with a colour is the official aviation colour code published by INGV for Etna and Stromboli. Neither is a civil-protection alert level.
Is an airport closed when it is marked orange or red?
Not necessarily. The colour comes from the airport’s weather report (thunderstorm, low visibility, volcanic ash). For flights, check with the airport or your airline.
Why does the radio sound different from yesterday?
It is played live from the weather, the time of day, the volcano and nearby earthquakes where you are, and it never repeats. In Radio → Learn you can see which data moves each sound.
Does the radio play in the background?
Yes. It keeps playing with the screen off. Speed and altitude update while the app is open.
Does Vulcana cost anything after the purchase?
No. One purchase, no subscription, no in-app purchases and no ads.
