Mother Nature has given way to Mother Technology. For the Latvian Pavilion at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, curated by NRJA, we made the machine respond: a tangle of black pipes that looks like a parasite — until it reacts to your presence and addresses you in its own reassuring language.

01A frightening stranger, a friendly neighbour

In our homes, offices and public spaces, technology has become a way of life — and it has changed how we live with architecture. The installation embodies our contradictory attitude towards it in a tangible, interactive way.

At first sight the pipes look like a foreign body that has overrun a human space. Then the lights answer the visitor: the stranger notices you, follows you and speaks. Coexistence replaces fear.

02Our part

SIA SPACE realized the idea of the exhibition’s light installation and its interaction — the behaviour that makes a building’s machinery feel aware of the people inside it — working alongside the NRJA team, audio designer Gatis Ziema and the full production crew.

“Technology is a means to an end. What may have seemed only “for the building”, proves to be “for you” after all.”
